The 2.3-metre sphere was chosen for predictable aerodynamics: whatever the initial attitude, the centre of mass turned the capsule heat-shield-first by itself. Inside were an ejection seat, three portholes, an instrument panel with the Globus IMP indicator and life support for ten days in case the retro-rocket failed.
The flight lasted 108 minutes. At seven kilometres Gagarin ejected and landed by parachute separately from the capsule — the standard procedure for all Vostok missions. The charred surface of the sphere is the mark of atmospheric entry.
On display is a series test article that passed ground qualification; the interior is fitted with authentic instruments of the period.
